This unit is part of a series of online educational units on select topics within Holocaust education. In these unique educational environments, we present a variety of teaching aids and auxiliary materials to assist the educator in teaching the subject, offering educators not only the historical information they need, but also the pedagogical tools to facilitate the lesson. The format allows educators to choose from the range of materials offered: lesson plans, presentations, archival materials, filmed testimonies, historical clips, Pages of Testimony and primary source materials (documents, photographs, diaries, maps, etc.), as well as video lectures.
The video shows Naïm moving into an empty apartment. She covers the walls in wallpaper depicting a lake surrounded by forest. She then begins unpacking several other things, including furniture, a piano, a goldfish in a bowl and a number of photographs of people, which she hangs on the wall. As she hangs the photographs, the people in the pictures are shown in real life, in the setting depicted in the pictures. Naïm then begins painting on the photographs, and whatever she paints appears with the people in real life. She removes one of the pictures to discover a hole in the wall, revealing the actual forest setting shown in the wallpaper. She pushes on the wall, and it falls away into the lake. The remaining walls fall onto the water leaving the floor of the apartment like a raft floating on the lake, together with her furniture. The people from her pictures reach her by boat. They climb onto the makeshift raft with her, as they all celebrate, dancing and playing instruments, whilst she empties the goldfish bowl into the lake.
Did you come to the US with your birth parents or were you first adopted and then come over? The attorney who handled my adoption advised my parents if they were able to visit me in Romania during the time of my adoption it would move the process along faster. My parents came to visit me and see me for the first time and on this visit they went to the courthouse and my adoption was made official. For reasons that are still unclear I had to stay in Romania with a transitional caretaker that worked with the adoption agency for about a month before being able to come to the United States (there was likely some sort of delay with the paperwork involved). Then one of the attorneys associates escorted me by plane to fly to JFK where my parents were there waiting for me to begin our new life.
